Size-selective deposition of particles combining liquid and particulate dielectrophoresis

چکیده
Rapid, size-based, deposition of particles from liquid suspension has been demonstrated using the nonuniform electric field created by coplanar microelectrode strips patterned on an insulating substrate. The scheme uses the dielectrophoretic force both to distribute aqueous liquid containing particles and, simultaneously, to separate the particles. Tests conducted with solutions containing equal volume fractions of 0.53 and 0.93 mm polystyrene beads, tagged with different fluorescent dyes, reveal size-based separation within nanoliter droplets formed along the structure after voltage removal. The relative volume ratio of the two sizes varies smoothly from 1:1 to ,3:1 sfavoring the smaller particlesd along the electrodes. Using the Clausius–Mossotti factor KI as the only adjustable parameter, the experimental data correlate to a numerical simulation of the process at RefKI g <0.5, a value consistent with expectation for polystyrene beads at ,100 kHz in aqueous suspension. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1852694g

AC Electrophoresis; Deposition of Ceramic Nanaoparticles on In-plane Electrodes at Low Frequencies (RESEARCH NOTE)
Deposition of ceramic nanoparticles (dispersed in a non-aqueous suspension) on in-plane electrodes and under the influence of AC electric fields in the frequency range of 0.01 Hz - 10 kHz is investigated. Analysis of the particle response to the applied field is a difficult task due to the mutual effect of electric- and hydrodynamic force which are present in the system. In this work, however, ...
متن کاملParticle Deposition in Human Respiratory Tract: Effect of Water- Soluble Fraction
In the nearly saturated human respiratory tract, the presence of water-soluble substances in inhaled aerosols can cause change in the size distribution of particles. This consequently alters the lung deposition profiles of the inhaled airborne particles. The magnitude of particle deposition in the lung is affected by the soluble component present in the particle. This is estimated by a numerica...

متن کاملLow cost air quality monitors to evaluate nanosized particulate matter. A pilot study
Particulate matter is defined as a mixture of airborne solid particles and liquid droplets that can be inhaled and may cause serious health problems. Such elements are currently measured utilizing air quality monitoring devices that provide information on PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels giving information on pollution levels. However, many difficulties are encountered in the determination of nanosized ...
